Why Preparation Matters
Travelling abroad for a medical procedure is not a small decision. Preparing well helps you avoid confusion, manage expectations, and feel more in control of the journey. When you know what to expect, the experience becomes calmer and less overwhelming.
At Anvita Medtours, we support you through this planning stage. If your questions are medical, we route them to our medical advisor (a practising general surgeon) so you receive accurate, clinically appropriate guidance. For everything else—travel, daily routines, recovery planning, or simply understanding how things work here—our coordinators will walk you through it step by step.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. We’re here to help you prepare with clarity and confidence.
Should You Travel With Someone?
Whenever possible, we recommend travelling with a medical attendant—a family member or someone you are comfortable with.
In some cases, it may be medically safe to travel alone, but that decision is made by our medical advisor and your treating consultants after reviewing your case. The goal is simple: to ensure you have steady support throughout your healing process.
An attendant provides practical help (managing documents, handling daily tasks) and emotional reassurance during what can be a vulnerable time. They also serve as your advocate if you’re too unwell to communicate clearly.
If travelling with someone is not possible, we adjust our support accordingly. You will not be left to manage on your own.
Understanding Your Treatment Plan
Before you travel, it is helpful to have a clear understanding of the treatment you are coming for. This usually includes the name of the procedure, the expected duration of hospital stay, and the approximate recovery time before you can return home. These details help you plan your trip with confidence, and help us prepare the right support for you when you arrive.
If any part of your plan is unclear, we will clarify it with the treating hospital and your consulting surgeon. We do not make medical decisions—we simply ensure you have the information you need to feel prepared.
Once you arrive in Chennai, your doctor will review your records in person, confirm the diagnosis, and finalise the treatment approach. Nothing is rushed and nothing is decided without your understanding.
Travel Documents & Medical Records Checklist
Having your documents organised helps make your arrival and first consultation smooth. You don’t need to do everything at once—our coordinators will guide you step by step.
By the time you board your flight, you would have already shared your medical records with us, so there’s nothing extra to manage. If it gives you peace of mind, keep a digital copy with you as well.
Essential Documents:
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
- Visa / e-Medical Visa (if required)
- Return or onward travel booking (flexible dates are fine)
- Travel insurance documentation (if applicable)
If any reports are missing or incomplete, please don’t worry—most tests can be repeated in Chennai quickly and reliably. Just let us know about any allergies or sensitivities in advance.
Packing: What to Bring and What Not to Bring
When travelling for treatment, it helps to keep things simple. Your focus should be on comfort and recovery, not managing luggage.
What to bring:
- Comfortable clothing (soft, loose-fitting cotton is ideal)
- Slip-on footwear (you’ll be taking shoes off frequently)
- Personal toiletries
- Essential medications with their prescriptions
- Medical records (printed or digital backup)
- Phone charger
- Light shawl or cardigan (hospitals are heavily air-conditioned)
- Small travel pillow (optional)
What not to bring:
- Heavy suitcases
- Expensive jewellery
- Unnecessary gadgets
- Large quantities of food items
You are coming here to heal—travelling light will make the journey easier and reduce stress. Once you arrive, we will take care of the rest.
Apps and Money Management
For daily convenience during your stay, it helps to have a few commonly used apps in India installed: Uber (transport), Instamart (groceries and essentials), and Swiggy (food delivery).
If you would like an easy way to withdraw or transfer money while in India, Wise is generally reliable and tends to offer better exchange rates than most forex counters.
Most hotels and hospitals accept international credit cards, but it’s useful to have some cash in Indian Rupees for small expenses. ATMs are widely available near hospitals and accommodations.
Accommodation During Recovery (Not a Hotel)
After your procedure, your body needs a calm environment to heal. Hospitals are for treatment; recovery requires rest, quiet, and gentle routine.
Hotels, however comfortable, are not designed for medical recovery—they are built for short stays, frequent cleaning cycles, and constant movement. They rarely provide the stability, privacy, or dietary control needed during healing.
Our recovery accommodations are selected for comfort, safety, and ease. These are quiet spaces with room to rest, access to nutritious meals, and support for follow-up visits. Caregivers can assist you safely, and your doctor is never far if you need to return for review.
The goal is simple: a peaceful space where you can focus entirely on regaining strength—without stress, noise, or the feeling of being unsettled in transit.
What Happens When You Arrive in Chennai
When you arrive in Chennai, our aim is to make your first steps simple and unhurried.
Our coordinator or driver will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your accommodation—no negotiating with taxis or figuring out directions after a long journey.
You’ll have time to rest and settle before visiting the hospital. When you’re ready, we will accompany you to your consultation, where the doctor will review your medical records, carry out any necessary tests, and finalise the treatment plan. You will always know what is happening and why—no surprises or pressure.
Throughout this period, our coordinators remain available to assist with scheduling appointments, clarifying instructions, and guiding you through each next step.
If there is time before your treatment begins, we’re happy to gently show you around the city—only if you feel up to it.
The first days are focused on orientation and comfort, not urgency. You are allowed to ease into the process and regain your sense of stability, with steady support at every stage.
During Treatment: What to Expect
Your treatment will be carried out under the care of your consulting surgeon and the hospital’s medical team. They will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and guide you through the consent process. If any additional tests or confirmations are needed before treatment, the hospital will arrange them. Everything is communicated step-by-step, so you always know what is happening and why.
During this phase, our role is to support you quietly and consistently. We help with paperwork, coordination, and communication, and ensure your attendant (if travelling with you) understands what to expect as well.
You are never left to navigate hospital systems on your own. The focus is on keeping the experience calm, predictable, and well-supported—allowing you to concentrate entirely on healing.
After Treatment: Safe Recovery Before Returning Home
Once your procedure is complete and you are medically stable, the focus shifts to rest and gradual recovery.
Most patients stay in Chennai for a short period after discharge so that the surgeon can monitor your progress, adjust medications, and ensure you are healing as expected. This phase is gentle and unhurried—you are encouraged to sleep, eat light meals, walk slowly, and regain strength at your own pace.
During recovery, we arrange follow-up visits, help you understand your medication schedule, and support any physiotherapy or dressing changes required. If you are staying in one of our recovery accommodations, you will have a calm, clean environment designed for rest—not the movement and noise of a hotel.
When your doctor confirms that it is safe to travel, we help you prepare for your return home with a clear discharge summary standardised to your home country format, medication plan, and follow-up instructions. You leave with clarity, not uncertainty.
Returning Home
Before you leave Chennai, several final steps ensure your journey home is safe and well-supported:
Final doctor review – Your surgeon will assess your healing progress and confirm you are fit to travel.
Medical fitness certificate – Required by most airlines for recent post-operative passengers, this document is provided by your treating hospital.
Complete discharge documentation – You will receive a detailed discharge summary, medication plan with generic drug names (useful for your home pharmacy), physiotherapy or exercise instructions if applicable, and follow-up recommendations for your local doctor.
Continued support – Anvita remains available on WhatsApp after you return home. If you have questions about your recovery, medication changes, or follow-up care, we are here to help coordinate with your treating surgeon.
This is not abandonment after payment. It is continuity of care.
A Final Word
A medical journey can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to be confusing or lonely. You will have clarity, guidance, and calm support at every step.
Your focus is to heal. Our focus is everything else.
